…These terrestrial species can tolerate the loss of water in their bodies better than those that live near water. All species are oviparous, with the exception of the African brown frog Nectophrynoides, which is ovoviviparous, and fertilize externally. In the breeding season, males develop a fleshy protuberance called a nuptial pad on their first toe and embrace the female. In addition to the common axillary type, there are also thoracic and lumbar types of embrace.

The African common toad, Nectophrynoides , is small, with a body length of 2 to 3 cm, and is the only ovoviviparous frog, giving birth to about 100 large offspring. The Japanese toad, Bufo japonicus japonicus (illustration), is commonly known as gama, hiki, or ohiki, and is commonly found in the plains and mountains of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu.
