Britain's first daily newspaper. Founded in 1702 by Elizabeth Mallet, it was taken over by Whig printer Samuel Buckley a few weeks later, and continued for 1735, a surprising longevity for a newspaper of that time. According to one historical document from 1704, it had a daily circulation of about 800 copies. It is famous for its founding manifesto, which stated, "The news will be presented objectively and from many angles, without the editor's subjectivity, and the judgment will be left to the readers."
