Kanem-Bornu Empire - Kanem-Bornu Empire (English spelling)

Japanese: カネム･ボルヌー帝国 - カネムボルヌーていこく（英語表記）Kanem‐Bornu

An empire that ruled the area around Lake Chad in Central Africa from around the 9th century to the 19th century. Its territory varied over time, but it spanned eastern Niger, northeastern Nigeria, northern Cameroon, and western Chad. Its origins are unclear, but it is believed to have been founded in the early 9th century by the Kanuri people with its capital at N'Jimi in the Kanem region northeast of Lake Chad. At the end of the 11th century, King Ume converted to Islam and it became an Islamic state. After this, the Kanuri organized a cavalry force using horses that they had originally used to rule the surrounding tribes, and it flourished as a key point on the inland trade route connecting North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa.

9世紀ごろから19世紀まで，中部アフリカのチャド湖周辺を支配した帝国。版図は時代により異なるが，ニジェール東部，ナイジェリア北東部，カメルーン北部，チャド西部にまたがる。起源はよくわかっていないが，9世紀初頭にカヌリ族がチャド湖北東のカネム地方のヌジミを首都として建国したと考えられている。11世紀末にウメ王がイスラムに改宗し，イスラム国となった。この後カヌリ族が元来使っていた馬で騎兵隊を組織して周辺種族を支配し，北アフリカとサハラ以南のアフリカとを結ぶ内陸貿易路の要衝として栄えた。
