Overcoming Modernity

This was a theme discussed in the magazines Chuokoron and Bungakukai in 1942, just after the outbreak of the Pacific War. Literary critics such as Kawakami Tetsutaro, Kamei Katsuichiro, Kobayashi Hideo, Hayashi Fusao, and Yoshimitsu Yoshihiko discussed overcoming Western culture. Intellectuals who sought a positive view of the Greater East Asia War, which advocated the liberation of Asia from Western modernity, sought justification in it. Although the idea ended without being explored in depth, Takeuchi Yoshimi reaffirmed its significance after World War II. Furthermore, as new international relations are sought after following the collapse of the communist bloc with the Soviet Union at its apex, some are questioning its meaning once again.

太平洋戦争勃発直後の 1942年，雑誌『中央公論』および『文学界』において論じられたテーマ。河上徹太郎，亀井勝一郎，小林秀雄，林房雄，吉満義彦らの文芸評論家が欧米文化の克服を論じたものである。西欧近代からのアジアの解放を標榜した大東亜戦争を肯定的に受けとめようとする知識人がそこに根拠を求めようとした。思想的には深められないまま終ったが，第2次世界大戦後竹内好がその意義をあらためて主張した。またソ連を頂点とした共産圏崩壊後，新しい国際関係が模索されるなかで，再びその意味を問う声もある。
