An early example of shosatsurei was the "Kirei Mondo" at the end of the Heian period, and many books have been produced since then. In particular, the "Koan Reisetsu" enacted in 1285 (Koan 8) was selected by imperial decree of Emperor Go-Uda, and corresponds to the situation in which shosatsurei-style documents had come to occupy the highest position in national politics. ...

…This is also called “Meigo Orai” and is a collection of example letters written by Izumo no Kami Fujiwara no Akihira, the first of many correspondences that were published afterwards. “Unshu Shosoku” is still merely a collection of model letters, but the first article on letter etiquette appears in “Kirei Mondo” written by Fujiwara no Tadachika at the end of the Heian period. This is also a collection of example letters, and at the end, in the “Shosokuji”, it lists eight simple rules, such as not writing the character “yoku” above the line, and is notable as the first book to describe letter etiquette. …
