A Muslim mystical sect (tariqa) based in Yas (now Turkestan) in Central Asia. Founded by Aḥmad Yasavī (?-1166∥67), a Turk born in Sayram in Central Asia in the late 11th century, it gained many followers among the nomadic Turks of Central Asia and the Volga coast, and Ahmad's mausoleum in the town of Yas is famous among the Turks as a holy place. Ahmad and his successors (who bore the pseudonym Ata) tried to spread their mystical ideas among the people in the form of poetry and songs in Turkish slang, and as a result, they established a new literary genre called mystical Turkish folk literature.
