A passerine bird of the Weaverbird family. It is about 11 cm long, slightly smaller than a sparrow. Sexes are heterochromatic. The male's reproductive plumage is orange-yellow from the crown to the back of the neck, the face and throat are black, and the back is brown with black stripes. The beak is red. The male's non-reproductive plumage and the female's face and throat are not black, but the head is gray and the eyebrows and throat are whitish. It is distributed in sub-Saharan Africa, living in the savanna. It feeds on seeds and grains, appearing in large flocks during the ripening season and causing great damage to crops.
