This is an Arts and Crafts style seen during the reign of Queen Anne of England (1702-14). Its characteristics are influenced by the Dutch Baroque style of the previous era of William and Mary, as well as Orientalism, such as lacquered furniture, but it is modest in decoration and aims for simple, practical forms. In furniture, emphasis was placed on classical, light and elegant forms rather than on luxury, and light-coloured walnut was preferred. Cabriole legs, which were modelled after animal legs, were used for the legs of tables and chairs. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
