Cardamom Hills

A mountain range that occupies the southernmost part of the Western Ghats in southern India. It is separated from the Nilgiri Hills to the north by a saddle called the Palghats. Although it is a hill range, its highest peak, Mount Anaimudi, has an elevation of 2,695 meters. The western slope, which receives more rainfall, is home to useful timber such as teak and bamboo, as well as tea, coffee, and the spice cardamom that gave the hills their name. Plans for irrigation and power generation are currently underway on the Periyar River.

インド南部、西ガーツ山脈の最南部を占める山塊。北のニルギリ丘陵とはパルガーツとよばれる鞍部(あんぶ)によって分けられる。丘陵とはいえ最高峰アナイムディ山は2695メートルの標高をもつ。雨量の多い西斜面ではチークや竹などの有用材がみられるとともに、茶、コーヒー、丘陵名の由来となった香料のカルダモンが栽培されている。ペリヤル川では灌漑(かんがい)、発電計画が進みつつある。
