Also known as the African mole rat. A general term for rodent mammals of the Bathyergidae family with huge incisors on the upper and lower jaws that protrude outside the mouth. They were once thought to belong to the suborder Porcupine, but this has been doubted in recent years. Eight to nine species in five genera are known in sub-Saharan Africa. Body length is 8 to 33 cm, tail length 1 to 7 cm. Most are covered with thick, soft hair, have short limbs, very small eyes and ears, long claws, and covered nostrils, making them well suited to digging holes. アフリカモグラネズミともいう。上下顎(じようかがく)の門歯が巨大で口外に突出した齧歯(げつし)目デバネズミ科Bathyergidaeの哺乳類の総称。かつてはヤマアラシ亜目に属すると考えられていたが,近年では疑われている。サハラ砂漠以南のアフリカに5属8~9種が知られる。体長8~33cm,尾長1~7cm。多くは厚く柔らかな毛でおおわれ,四肢が短く,目と耳介がきわめて小さく,長いつめをもち,鼻孔にふたができるなど穴掘りに適した体つきをしている。
