In art, painters who studied at the Düsseldorf Academy after Dahl, such as Adolph Tidemand (1814-76) and Hans Gude (1825-1903), who collaborated on "Hardanger Wedding," in music, the famous violinist Ole Bull and composer Halfdan Kjerulf, who based their work on folk music, in literature, the passionate poet Wergeland, who was in fierce conflict with the pro-Danish Welhaven, and the historian Peter Andreas Munch (1810-63), who wrote the extensive eight-volume "History of the Norwegian People," laid the foundation for the romantic character of the country that continues to this day.
