In the Heian period, farmland was donated to the Daigakuryo (University of Greater China), Tenyakuryo (Inferior Medicine Bureau), and Onmyoryo (Inferior Medicine Bureau) to help with student expenses, in order to encourage learning. It was actually started in 757 when 30 cho of public land was donated to the Daigakuryo and 10 cho each to the other bureaus, but it wasn't until 794 when 130 cho of land was donated to the Daigakuryo that it became known as Kangakuden. 平安時代,学問を奨励するため,大学寮,典薬寮,陰陽寮などに加賜して学生の費用に供した田地。天平宝字1 (757) 年大学寮に 30町,他寮に各 10町の公廨田 (くがいでん) が供されたのが実質的な始りだが,勧学田と呼ばれたのは延暦 13 (794) 年 130町あまりが大学寮に加賜されたときであった。
