Year of death: August 7, 1487 (August 25, 1487) Year of birth: August 25, 1421 (September 21, 1421) A Rinzai sect monk from the Muromachi period. Born in Bizen (Okayama Prefecture). He had many pseudonyms, including Seiken, Seian, Takeya Dojin, and Biyosanjin. At the age of nine, he became a monk under Takean Daien and inherited his teachings. In 1467 (Onin 1), he studied the doctrines of both the Kegon and Hosso sects in Nara. He was also well versed in Neo-Confucianism and showed an interest in Pure Land Buddhism. In 1474 (Bunmei 6), he returned to Kyoto and served as the head priest of Tofukuji Temple. He later served as the abbot of Kaikaiji Temple in Izumi (Osaka Prefecture), and in the 12th year of the same year, he became the 174th abbot of Tofukuji Temple. He retired the following year and spent his later years mainly active at Kaikaiji Temple, interacting with many members of the Hoto school of the Rinzai sect. 没年:長享1.8.7(1487.8.25) 生年:応永28.8.25(1421.9.21) 室町時代の臨済宗の僧。備前(岡山県)の人。蔗軒,蔗庵,竹谷道人・備陽山人など多くの別号を持つ。9歳で竹庵大縁について出家,その法を嗣いだ。応仁1(1467)年南都(奈良)で華厳,法相両宗の教義を学ぶ。このほか朱子学にも詳しく,浄土思想にも関心を示していたという。文明6(1474)年京都に帰り東福寺の首座を勤めた。のち和泉(大阪府)海会寺の住持を経て,同12年には東福寺の第174世となった。翌年退き,晩年は海会寺を中心に活動,臨済宗法燈派の人々とも多く交流した。このとき記した日記が『蔗軒日録』である。ほかに『蔗軒遺藁』がある。 (石井清純) 出典 朝日日本歴史人物事典:(株)朝日新聞出版朝日日本歴史人物事典について 情報 |
