Japanese: 日南[市] - にちなん

A city in the southern part of Miyazaki Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1950. It faces the Hyuga-Nada Sea, occupies the Hiroto River basin and the surrounding mountainous areas, and is served by the Nichinan Line. The city center is Obi, which developed as a castle town for the Ito clan of the Obi Domain, and the old port town of Abutsu. Obi is the commercial center, Abutsu is the base for long-distance fishing for bonito and tuna, and Agata, in between, is home to a large pulp factory. The rural areas are known for producing extra-early rice, and are thriving in the cultivation of vegetables and citrus fruits. Timber is also abundant, and Obi cedar has been known since the feudal period. The former samurai residences are a nationally designated Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. The coast is included in the Nichinan Coast Quasi-National Park, and includes Udozaki. Nichinan Onsen Sun Resort Park is located here. In March 2009, the towns of Kitago and Nango in Minaminaka District were incorporated. Area: ^{536.11 km2} . Population: 57,689 (2010).

宮崎県南部の市。1950年市制。日向灘(ひゅうがなだ)に面し，広渡川流域と周辺の山地を占め，日南線が通じる。中心市街は飫肥(おび)藩伊東氏の城下町として発達した飫肥と，古くからの港町油津。飫肥は商業の中心，油津はカツオ・マグロ遠洋漁業の基地，中間の吾田(あがた)にはパルプの大工場がある。農村は超早場米の産地として知られ，野菜の促成栽培，柑橘(かんきつ)類の栽培が盛ん。木材の産も多く，藩政期から飫肥杉で知られる。かつての武家屋敷群は国の重要伝統的建造物群保存地区になっている。海岸は日南海岸国定公園に含まれ，鵜戸(うど)崎がある。日南温泉サン・リゾートパークがある。2009年３月南那珂郡北郷町，南郷町を編入。536.11km²。５万7689人（2010）。
