1610‐88 A French Greek scholar. His real name was Charles du Fresne, and Du Cange was the name of his estate. He was one of the leading scholars of the 17th century in France, along with Daniel Huet and Mabillon, and was called the "French Varlot." He was known for his diligence, but his generous personality, which allowed him to treat his many children and friends with kindness, made him a model scholar. At the age of 47, he published his first work, "History of the Empire of Constantinople," and became the founder of academic research into Byzantine history. At the age of 68, he published a three-volume work, "Glossarium ad scriptores mediae et infimae latinitatis," which was expanded to six volumes after his death (1733-36), and was further expanded to seven volumes by the Benedictine Saint-Maur, and ten volumes from 1883 to 1887. Du Cange is so famous that this dictionary is now commonly referred to. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
