Spanish navigator and explorer. Born in Zaragoza. Nephew of the Governor of Peru, Mendaña set sail from Callao, Peru in 1567 for the South Pacific in order to discover and claim the rumored southern continent overflowing with gold. The group sighted the Ellice Islands, and in 1568 they "discovered" Santa Isabel, Guadalcanal, Malaita, and San Cristobal in the Solomon Islands. They attempted to establish a colony on San Cristobal, but failed, and returned to Callao in 1568. In April 1595, he again set sail from Paita, Peru, leading a fleet of four ships carrying settlers for the Solomon Islands, and in July of the same year they "discovered" the four southern islands of the Marquesas.

スペインの航海者，探検家。サラゴサの生れ。ペルー総督の甥であったメンダーニャは，うわさに聞く黄金のあふれる南方大陸を発見･領有すべく，1567年ペルーのカヤオ港を出帆，南太平洋に向かった。一行はエリス諸島を望見し，68年ソロモン諸島のサンタ･イサベル，ガダルカナル，マライタ，サン･クリストバル島を〈発見〉した。サン･クリストバル島に植民地を建設しようとしたが失敗し，68年カヤオに帰着した。95年4月彼は再びソロモン諸島への入植者を乗せた4隻の船隊を率いてペルーのパイタ港を出帆し，同年7月マルキーズ諸島南部の4島を〈発見〉した。
