1542?-95 Spanish navigator and explorer. Born in Zaragoza. Nephew of the Governor of Peru, Mendaña set sail from Callao, Peru in 1567 for the South Pacific in order to discover and claim the rumored southern continent overflowing with gold. The group sighted the Ellice Islands, and in 1568 they "discovered" Santa Isabel, Guadalcanal, Malaita, and San Cristobal in the Solomon Islands. They attempted to establish a colony on San Cristobal, but failed, and returned to Callao in 1568. In April 1595, he again set sail from Paita, Peru, leading a fleet of four ships carrying settlers for the Solomon Islands, and in July of the same year they "discovered" the four southern islands of the Marquesas.
