Dusky thrush

Japanese: ツグミ(鶫) - ツグミ（英語表記）dusky thrush

A passerine bird of the family Muscicapidae and subfamily Turdus (illustration). It breeds in the forests of northeastern Siberia and winters in China and Japan. Total length is about 24 cm. The upperparts are dark brown with white eyebrows. The underparts are whitish with black spots on the chest and flanks. The wings are light brown. Sexes are the same color. It migrates to Japan around October. When it first arrives, it lives in relatively large flocks and mostly eats nuts. However, it gradually disperses and lives in flocks of several birds or alone in farmland, riverbanks, and bright forests. It takes a few quick steps on the ground, stops, and catches and eats small animals such as insects.

スズメ目ヒタキ科ツグミ亜科の鳥（イラスト）。シベリア北東部の林で繁殖し，中国や日本で越冬する。全長約24cm。上面は暗褐色で，眉は白い。下面は白っぽく，胸とわき腹に黒斑がある。翼は明るい褐色。雌雄同色。日本には10月ころ渡来する。渡来当初は比較的大きな群れで生活し，木の実を食べることが多い。しかし，しだいに分散し，農耕地，河原，明るい林などで数羽の群れか単独で生活するようになる。地上で数歩足早に歩いて立ち止まり，昆虫などの小動物をつかまえて食べる。
