〘Noun〙 ("Fuso" means room)① A lady-in- waiting 's room. A lady-in-waiting's chief officer. Also refers to a lady-in-waiting who serves the Imperial Court and is given a room to live in by herself. Divided into upper, lower , and lower ranks according to rank and origin, they are in charge of the miscellaneous affairs of the Imperial Court. They also refer to women who serve the Emperor, various princes, nobles, and samurai, and generally to maids. ※Koyuki - April 30, 985, Kanwa 1 (1st year), "20 kan, one for each male , and 10 kan for each female wife." ② In the Middle Ages and early modern times, it generally referred to a woman, or a woman as an object of affection. 〘名〙 (「房」は部屋(へや)の意)① 女官のへや。女官の曹司。また、朝廷に仕える女官で、一人住みの房を与えられている者をいう。身分や出身により上臈(じょうろう)、中臈、下臈に分けられて、宮中の雑事をつかさどる。また、院、諸宮、公家、武家などに仕える女、さらには、一般に侍女をもいう。※小右記‐寛和元年(985)四月三〇日「廿貫、以十貫男方、十貫給女房」② 中世、近世、一般に婦人、または愛情の対象としての女性をいう。女。※今昔(1120頃か)二七「青ばみたる衣着たる女房の裾取たるが、只独り立たりければ」③ 中世以後、妻をいう。妻女。近世には、自分の妻を呼ぶとき「女房ども」ともいう。現代では、多少とも卑しめた気持をもっていい、自分の妻のことをいう場合に多く用いられる。※米沢本沙石集(1283)七「光寂坊の女房并に殿人・資財・雑具、併ら可給候」④ 宮廷または摂関家の歌合(うたあわせ)などで、天皇や上皇、摂政関白などが、身分を隠すために歌に作者名として記す語。判者が気がねなく勝負の判をすることができるように、女房の作とする。※類従本元永元年十月二日内大臣忠通歌合(1118)「二番 左〈略〉女房」[補注](1)「にょうぼう」から変化した語に、「にょうぼ」がある。また、「ねうばう」「にうばう(にうぼう)」と表記されたものも見られ、それは一般には「にょうぼう」と読まれたものと考えられているが、「にうばう」は便宜別項とした。→にゅうぼう。
