Kiyotsu Gorge

Japanese: 清津峡 - きよつきょう

The gorge of the Kiyotsu River, a tributary of the Shinano River, straddles Yuzawa Town, Minami-Uonuma District, Niigata Prefecture, and Nakazato Village, Naka-Uonuma District (now Tokamachi City). Eroding the pyroxene andesite at the foot of Mt. Naeba, the gorge has created cliffs several tens of meters high over a distance of about 8 km. Columnar joints are well developed, and the autumn leaves are beautiful. Downstream is Kiyotsukyo Onsen. Suzuki Makino writes in his Akiyama Kikō that “the stream flows gushingly around the rocks, sometimes breaking into white waves and rocks.” Take a bus from Echigo-Yuzawa Station on the Joetsu Line.

新潟県南魚沼郡湯沢町と中魚沼郡中里村（現・十日町市）にまたがる信濃川支流の清津川の峡谷（名勝・天然記念物）。苗場山麓の輝石安山岩を浸食し約8kmにわたり高さ数十mの断崖をつくる。柱状節理も発達，紅葉が美しい。下流に清津峡温泉がある。鈴木牧之の《秋山記行》には〈渓水涓々として巌を巡り，或白浪磐石に砕け散り〉などと記される。上越線越後湯沢駅からバス。
