[History of human rights in Japan]
The terms "human rights" and "fundamental human rights" are not native Japanese words. Apart from appearing in the civil rights movement of the early Meiji period, these terms became popular after World War II as translations of "human rights" and "fundamental human rights." However, it cannot be denied that there was some idea of human rights mediated by the right to life, such as religious freedom and the idea of human equality, latent in Buddhist thought and in the thought of early modern townspeople and farmers.
