...In the field of STP, since it is effective for comprehensive understanding to have many groups from around the world make various observations from both on Earth and outside the atmosphere, international comprehensive observations have been organized frequently, beginning with the International Geophysical Year from 1957-58, and each time, understanding of the space around the Earth has gradually deepened. From Japan, two scientific satellites, Kyokou and Jikiken, launched into orbit by the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, University of Tokyo (now the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, Ministry of Education), participated in the IMS (International Magnetosphere Mission) from 1976-78. Kyokou was launched in 1978, and for three years it looked down on the North Pole from afar and took ultraviolet photographs of the aurora every moment, which was a unique observation like no other. ...
