The capital of the United Republic of Tanzania in East Africa. Population 1,361,000 (1988). Its name means "House of Peace" in Arabic, reflecting the fact that it has been influenced by Islam since ancient times and flourished as a port on the Indian Ocean coast. The railway line that starts here reaches the shores of Lake Tanganyika and Lake Victoria, and the copper mining areas of Zambia, and port activity is thriving with the export of inland products and the loading and unloading of inland imports. It is the center of commerce and industry, and is also home to a national university, museums, botanical gardens, and a general hospital.
