Originally a prefix derived from the Greek word meaning "outside, outside." It is paired with the prefix endo, meaning "inside, inside." In the stereochemical nomenclature of organic compounds, exo was originally used as a prefix to indicate a position closer to the main bridging group of bicyclic compounds such as camphor. For example, the hydroxyl group of isoborneol, -OH, is closer to the main bridging group -C(CH 3 ) 2 -, so it is an exo type, whereas the hydroxyl group of borneol is an endo type. In general, the exo position has less steric hindrance than the endo position. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
