1876‐1947 Spanish politician and businessman. Born in Catalonia. He became involved in the Catalan regionalist movement while still at university, and became a central figure in the 1920s and 1930s. However, his political stance was delicate, as he defended Spanish unity and the monarchy against the separatist movement and anti-monarchy and anti-republican forces. He became a member of the Spanish parliament in 1917, and served as a cabinet minister twice (1918, 21), but fled to Argentina when the civil war began.
