Kampen (English spelling) Jakob van
Born: 2 February 1595 in Haarlem
[Died] September 13, 1657. Landenbroek, Dutch architect and painter. Born to a wealthy landowner, he first became a painter, then travelled to Italy from 1615 to 1621, where he became familiar with the architecture of A. Palladio and V. Scamozzi. The Mauritshuis in The Hague (now the Museum of Fine Arts, 1633-35) shows the influence of the Baroque architecture of Palladio and others, and is considered the most important building in the Netherlands in the 17th century. His New Cathedral in Haarlem (St. Anne's Cathedral, 1645-49) was also original, and influenced the English architect Wren. He then built the City Hall of Amsterdam (now the Royal Palace), and became a representative architect of Dutch classical architecture.
