1785‐1855 The eldest son of Sultan Amangkubuwono III of Yogyakarta, Java, Indonesia, and a leader of the rebel army during the Java War (1825-30). One of the national heroes of the Republic of Indonesia. When his father died in 1814 during the British rule of Java (1811-16), Diponegoro's mother was of low status, so the throne was succeeded by his younger brother Jarot. From his childhood, Diponegoro lived in an Islamic boarding school, hating the corruption and intrigues of the court, and had contact with the general public.
