Year of death: 6th February 1867 (11th March 1867) Year of birth: 1825 A Chinese poet of the late Edo period. His given name was Kuma, Ikumi, his pen name was Yumeyoshi, he was commonly known as Shunzo, Ayao, and his pen names were Tetsukabuto and Hideno. He was the third son of Kono Michihito, a doctor from Aboshi in Harima Province (Hyogo Prefecture). He first studied under Yoshida Kakusen in Marugame, Sanuki, and at the age of 20, he studied poetry under Yanagawa Seigan in Kyoto. He later traveled to Edo to broaden his horizons, and in 1852, at the age of 28, he entered the service of the Hayashida Domain (Hayashida-cho, Himeji City) and became a professor at the domain school, Chidokan, where he preached to the domain lord, Takebe, on the principle of revering the Emperor and expelling the barbarians. He preferred simple and light poetry, and held Bai Juyi in high regard. He was also an energetic writer, as he himself said, "My books exceed my own size, and my poems number no less than ten thousand."
