It refers to the savanna (Campo Cerrado) and grassland (Campo Sompo) that are distributed over an area of ​​about 2 million square kilometers on the Brazilian Plateau in central Brazil, and is sometimes used as the name of the region in which they are distributed. The thorny scrub forest (caatinga) found in the semi-arid regions of northeastern Brazil is sometimes included in Campo. Campo Cerrado is a savanna unique to the Brazilian Plateau, and is characterized by a landscape of scattered shrubs with twisted trunks and branches amidst the grassland. It is distributed in areas with an annual rainfall of 1,000 to 1,500 mm and a dry season of 4 to 7 months per year. Most trees lose their leaves during the dry season, but some are evergreen. Herbs die during the dry season, and wildfires occur frequently.

ブラジル中部のブラジル高原上に、約200万平方キロメートルの広さに分布するサバンナ（カンポ・セラード）および草原（カンポ・ソンポ）をいい、これらが分布する地域名として用いられることもある。ブラジル北東部の半乾燥地域にみられる刺(とげ)のある低木林（カーチンガ）をカンポに含めることもある。カンポ・セラードはブラジル高原特有のサバンナで、草原の中に幹や枝が曲がりくねった低木が散開した景観をなす。年降水量1000～1500ミリメートル、年間4～7か月の乾期がある地域に分布する。樹木の多くは乾期に落葉するが常緑のものもある。草本は乾期に枯れ、野火が頻発する。
