When designing the insulation of power system equipment for power generation, transmission, transformation, and distribution, the insulation design is carried out to balance the entire power system and be economical, taking into account protective devices such as arcing horns and lightning arresters and their characteristics, as well as the function and importance of each piece of equipment, in order to deal with abnormal voltages such as surges (sudden increases in current and voltage) caused by lightning and surges caused by opening and closing circuit breakers. This is called insulation coordination.

電力系統の発電・送電・変電・配電用設備の絶縁設計にあたっては，雷によるサージ (電流・電圧の急増) や遮断器の開閉に伴うサージなどの異常電圧に対処するため，アーキングホーンや避雷器などの保護装置やその特性，およびそれぞれの設備の機能と重要性などを考慮して，電力系統全体のバランスをとり，かつ経済的になるように絶縁設計を行う。これを絶縁協調という。
