A type of military force that acts as an honor guard and is responsible for ceremonies and protection for heads of state and important people. In the former Japanese military, honor guards were divided into honor guard units that were involved in protecting the emperor or important people on the road, and honor guards that were involved in guarding lodgings and temporary residences. One honor guard battalion was organized for the emperor, and one company for special inspectors and naval base commanders. Honor guard units were also used to send off and receive official visitors such as the commander of a foreign fleet, as well as for festivals, celebrations, and funerals. This is a common practice in many countries today. [Kokatsu Atsushi] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
