Honor guard - gijohei

A type of military force that acts as an honor guard and is responsible for ceremonies and protection for heads of state and important people. In the former Japanese military, honor guards were divided into honor guard units that were involved in protecting the emperor or important people on the road, and honor guards that were involved in guarding lodgings and temporary residences. One honor guard battalion was organized for the emperor, and one company for special inspectors and naval base commanders. Honor guard units were also used to send off and receive official visitors such as the commander of a foreign fleet, as well as for festivals, celebrations, and funerals. This is a common practice in many countries today.

儀仗として元首・要人などの儀礼・警護を担当する軍隊の一種。旧日本軍では儀仗兵を、天皇または要人の途上警護に携わる儀仗隊と、宿舎・行在所(あんざいしょ)の警護に携わる儀仗衛兵とに分けていた。儀仗隊は、天皇には1大隊、特命検閲吏・鎮守府司令官には1中隊で編制された。儀仗隊はこのほかに、外国の艦隊司令官などの公式訪問の送迎や祭典・祝賀・葬喪に使用された。これは今日各国の慣例にもなっている。
