…In 1934, German geologist H. Stille defined five regions on Earth as the world's oldest continental masses, which he named the Urkraton protolith. These were called Rusia (most of Scandinavia and parts of Russia), Angaria (central Siberia), Laurentia (most of Canada and Greenland), Sinia (eastern China), and Gondwania (South America, Africa, India, etc.), but most of them are shields. The oldest rocks known today are gneisses on the west coast of Greenland, which belong to the Canadian Shield, and their age has been estimated to be 3.8 to 3.9 billion years. …
