Brahma Samāj

Brahma Samāj
The religious group that played the most important role in the religious and social reform movement in modern India. The founding of the Brahma Samaj is generally considered to have occurred when RM Roy founded the Brahma Sabha in Calcutta in 1828. The Brahma Sabha, which worshipped one, intangible and omnipresent God, rejected idolatry and advocated universal faith, saw its activities decline after Roy moved to England (late 1830), but was revived in 1843 when Devendranāth Tagore (1817-1905) led a group of 20 young men through an initiation ceremony.
