Grass and shellfish harvesting industry

Japanese: 採草採貝業 - さいそうさいかいぎょう

A small-scale fishery targeting seaweed and shellfish, often using specialized fishing gear adapted to the task.

This is a fishery whose main purpose is to harvest seaweed, but for the purposes of agriculture, forestry and fisheries statistics, diving fisheries are excluded even if they are algae harvesting fisheries. Since the target is algae up to a depth of about 20m, the scale of the fishery is small, and most operations are carried out by fishing boats of less than 3 tons. The main target species are edible kelp, wakame, agar-making tengusa, and ogonori.

　海藻をとることを主目的とする漁業だが，農林水産統計上は藻類をとる漁業であっても潜水器漁業は除く。水深20mぐらいまでの藻類が対象なので，漁業の規模は小さく，3トン未満の漁船による操業がほとんどである。おもな対象種は，食用とするコンブ，ワカメと寒天原料のテングサ，オゴノリなどである。
