Since the superimposing method was used in 1935 to successfully identify two female victims from their skulls in the Luxton murder case in Scotland, it has been widely used as a powerful means of identifying individuals from skulls. In other words, when an unidentified skull is discovered, a photograph of the face of the person believed to be the relevant person is superimposed on a photograph of the skull taken from the same angle, and burned into a single photograph.
