…He was born in Chicago and grew up in New York, but he had already started writing novels while he was a student at Harvard University. He depicted various aspects of modern society in a traditional realistic style, but his works were based on conservatism, which emphasized social power rather than individual activities, and he was noted as a unique figure in American literature. He depicted a shipwreck and a sailor in The Disaster of the San Pedro (1931), a doctor in The Last Adam (1933), the church in The Brothers (1936), the world of law in The Just and the Unjust (1942), and the military organization and racial discrimination in the Honor Guard (1948), which won him the Pulitzer Prize, set against the backdrop of an air base in the South during World War II. He then published A Man in Love in 1957, whose conservative yet precise depiction of love attracted mixed reviews and became a best-seller, which was rare for his works. …
