Jovine - Francesco Jovine

Italian novelist. Born into a poor family in the Molise region of southern Italy, he studied hard. He made his debut with the autobiographical collection of short stories "The Chicken Thief" (1930), but he soon began to write realistically, incorporating dialect, on themes such as unfulfilled love, the decadence and boredom of city dwellers living indecisive, rootless lives, and the evils of peasants ruled by slavery, violence and disorder. His representative works include "Madame Abba" (1942), "The Buried Shepherd" (1945), and "The Sacramental Land" (1950).

イタリアの小説家。南イタリア、モリーゼ地方の貧家に生まれ、苦学した。自伝的要素の濃い短編集『鶏泥棒』（1930）で世に出たが、やがて、満たされない愛、優柔不断で根なし草のような生活を送る都会人の退廃と倦怠(けんたい)、あるいは、隷属と暴力と無秩序に支配される農民の悪を主題に、方言を取り入れた、リアリスティックな筆致で描いた。代表作は『アーバ夫人』（1942）、『埋葬された羊飼い』（1945）、『秘跡の土地』（1950）など。
