…One representative example is Yugumokai (present-day Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture). During the Kan'ei era (1624-44), the shogunate magistrate Kozai Yugumo, with the cooperation of Sakai merchant Kijiya Shoemon, developed new fields in the wilderness that stretched eastward from the area around Emperor Nintoku's tomb in Otori County, Izumi Province. The area was originally named Mozushinden, but came to be called Yugumokai after the developer. The area had been developed a long time ago, when old villages stood on the terraces of the diluvial deposits, and the abandoned wasteland between them was opened up to create new fields. …
