Pericarditis is a general term for inflammatory lesions caused by various factors in the pericardium (consisting of the epicardium, which covers the surface of the heart, and the pericardium in the narrow sense, which covers the heart, separating it from the narrow pericardial cavity), and is also called pericarditis or pericarditis. Pericarditis is usually broadly divided into three types: acute pericarditis, chronic pericarditis, and congenital pericarditis. In the past, acute pericarditis was thought to be mostly caused by rheumatism or tuberculosis, but recently, idiopathic pericarditis of unknown cause has become more common, and its main cause is said to be viral.

心囊炎とは，心臓を包む心膜pericardium(心臓の表面を包む心外膜epicardiumと狭い心膜腔を隔てて心臓を包む狭義の心膜から成る)の種々の原因によって起こる炎症病変の総称であり，心膜炎あるいは心包炎ともいわれる。心囊炎は通常，急性心囊炎，慢性心囊炎，先天性心囊炎の三つに大別される。急性心囊炎の原因として以前はリウマチ性あるいは結核性が多いと考えられていたが，最近では原因不明の特発性心囊炎が多く，その主因はウイルス性といわれている。
