The central island of French Polynesia. Located in the eastern Society Islands. Two volcanic islands are connected by the Isthmus of Taravao, and the whole island is mountainous and surrounded by coral reefs. The inhabitants are Polynesian Ma'ohi, mixed races, Europeans, Chinese, etc. The administrative and commercial functions of French Polynesia are concentrated in the capital, Papeete. The population of Tahiti accounts for two-thirds of the total population of French Polynesia. Tourism development is thriving, but the island is also known for its high prices. Europeans first arrived around 1767, and since then they have had an image of Tahiti as a "utopia." The mutineers on the British ship Bounty, which arrived in 1788, put an end to the conflicts between the divided chiefs and were involved in the political unification of the entire island. It became a French protectorate in 1847, and a colony in 1880. Gauguin left many of his masterpieces here. 1042 km 2 . 178,132 people (2007).
