Some relics belonging to the La Tène culture are the oldest in Irish art. These were brought by the Celts who migrated from the continent and settled there. Their unique art, mainly spiral writing, formed an important part of pre-Romanesque art in manuscripts, reliefs, cloisonné, and crosses after monastic activity in the 5th century. Its period of flowering was from the second half of the 7th century to the 8th century, when works such as The Book of Durrow, The Lindisfarne Gospels, and The Book of Kells were produced. Due to the Viking invasions in the 9th century and the dominance of Romanesque art from the continent, Ireland followed the trends of continental Europe and Britain from the 12th century onwards. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Ireland produced painters such as W. Mulready and W. Orpen.
