Massis, Henri
Born: March 21, 1886 in Paris
Died April 17, 1970. French critic, Paris. Pen name Agathon. Studied at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Paris and the Ecole Nationale des Arts Décoratifs. As editor-in-chief of the magazine Opinion (1911-14), he conducted a survey titled "Today's Youth" which attracted attention. In 1920, together with J. Banville, he founded the magazine Le vieux Universelle. He preached the ideals of patriotism and Catholicism from a traditionalist standpoint, attacking Gide, R. Rolland and others, and often sparking fierce debates. His major works include Jugements (23-24), Défence de l'Occident (27), Maurras et notre temps (51), and L'Occident et son destin (56). He was a member of the Académie Française (60).
