Hanasaki crab - Hanasaki crab

Japanese:
Hanasaki crab - Hanasaki crab

A marine animal belonging to the order Decapoda, class Crustacea, family Paralimniidae. An important species in the fishing industry, it is crab-shaped but, like the red king crab, is classified as an Anomura (hermit crab). It is distributed in the northern Sea of Japan, from Hokkaido to the Bering Sea, but its Japanese name comes from the fact that it was once abundant in the Hanasaki Peninsula (Nemuro Peninsula). It lives in shallow waters, and small individuals can be seen among seaweed on the shore. Its carapace is about 15 cm wide and long, with many projections, and the spaces between them are smooth. It resembles the red king crab, but can be distinguished by its short central spine on its rostrum with a rounded tip, and its thick, short walking legs. It is dark reddish-purple brown when raw, and turns bright red when boiled. With the stricter fishing regulations for red king crab, the resource value of this species has been reevaluated.
