Order: Gannetidae, family: Cormorant. Total length: 84-92 cm. Overall blackish, with a bluish-green back. Like the great cormorant, during breeding season, many white reproductive feathers (→ plumage) appear from the head to the neck, and large white spots appear on the thighs. They breed in the Ussuri region, Sakhalin Island, the southern Kuril Islands, eastern China, the coast of the Korean Peninsula, and Japan. In Japan, they breed in groups mainly in parts of northern Kyushu and north, and on the coasts and islands of Hokkaido. In winter, they migrate south widely to the coastal waters of Honshu, and have been recorded in the Ryukyu Islands and the Ogasawara Islands. They sometimes create collective resting areas on coastal cliffs. They rarely enter inland waters, and mainly dive in coastal waters to prey on fish. The cormorants used in cormorant fishing in Japan are captured and tamed versions of this species.
