?-1545 King of the Kingdom of Kongo (Mani Kongo) in Africa. Reigned 1506-45. After the Portuguese arrived in the late 15th century, he converted to Catholicism and ascended to the throne in 1506, calling himself Afonso I (formerly Nzinga Mvemba). He exchanged diplomatic missions with Portugal, welcomed missionaries, masons, blacksmiths, agricultural engineers, and others, encouraged the spread of Christianity, and worked to assimilate Portuguese culture and implement a policy of Westernization. He sent two of his sons to the Pope, built a European-style palace, established churches and schools, and renamed the capital, Mbanza Kongo, São Salvador.
