She is the protagonist of the representative Tamil (South Indian) epic poem Silapadiharam (by Ilangor Adihar, mid-5th century?), and the wife of the merchant Kovalan, whose fate is marked by a strange one. In ancient Tamil, she has been considered the epitome of a chaste and passionate woman, and is identified with the goddess Pattini.
