Philippine religious movement leader. Commonly known as Hermano Pule. Born in Lucban, Tayabas Province (now Quezon Province) on the island of Luzon. At about the age of 15, he went to Manila to become a religious monk, but was unable to achieve his goal due to racial discrimination within the order. He then worked as a servant in a hospital run by the Franciscans while studying doctrine. Around 1832, he founded the Cofradía de San José. In rebellion against the situation in which Spanish colonists and Chinese merchants were granted pardons and guaranteed a path to heaven through the power of wealth, he pursued heaven through earnest prayer.

フィリピンの宗教運動指導者。通称はエルマノ･プーレHermano Pule。ルソン島タヤバス州(現，ケソン州)ルクバン町生れ。15歳ころ修道会士を志してマニラへ出たが，修道会の人種差別で志を果たせなかった。そこで，フランシスコ会経営の病院で召使を務めつつ教義を習得。1832年ころサン･ホセ信徒団Cofradía de San Joséを結成した。植民者スペイン人や中国系商人が富の力で免罪を得，天国への道を保証されている状況に反発して，ひたすらな〈祈り〉で天国を追求した。
