A battle for Kawagoe Castle in Musashi Province took place between the Later Hojo clan and the Yamauchi and Ogigayatsu Uesugi clans from 1545 (Tenbun 14) to the following year. Kawagoe Castle was the residence of the Ogigayatsu Uesugi clan, but it was attacked and captured by Hojo Ujitsuna in 1537 (Tenbun 6), and since then it had served as the Later Hojo clan's advance base in Musashi. In October 1545, Yamauchi Uesugi Norimasa, the Kanto Kanrei, mobilized various generals from the Kanto region, set up camp at Sunakubo, and laid siege to Kawagoe Castle. 3,000 men, including Hojo general Hojo (Fukushima) Tsunanari, barricaded themselves inside the castle and fought back, while the Uesugi side set up a long camp and laid siege to the enemy with food.
