A mountain range that runs north to south on both the east and west sides of the Deccan Plateau in southern India. It is divided into the Eastern Ghats and the Western Ghats. The Western Ghats stretch about 1,600 km along the Arabian Sea from Cape Comorin at the southern tip of the peninsula to the Thapti River. The average elevation is 900 m. It blocks the southwest monsoon in summer, so the western coast gets a lot of rain and the Deccan Plateau behind it is dry. The Eastern Ghats stretch about 1,400 km along the Bay of Bengal from the southern tip of the peninsula to the Mahanadi River. The average elevation is 600 m. Rain falls on the southeast coast during the winter monsoon. The mountain range is discontinuous, cut by rivers such as the Godavari and Krishna.
