… Another characteristic of 16th-century Flemish art, along with the Italianization, is that the seeds of genre, landscape, and still-life paintings, which were included in 15th-century Flemish religious paintings, began to grow into their own independent genre. Genre painting began with Massys's The Money Changer and His Wife, and was continued by Jan van Hemessen (c. 1500-c. 1565), who used the story of the Prodigal Son to paint a scene from a brothel, and P. Aertsen, who also used biblical themes but placed special importance on genre and still-life elements. In the early 16th century, J. Patinir reversed the relationship between figure and background in conventional religious paintings, placing figures as points of interest in a panoramic landscape seen from above. …
