[Died] October 20, 1867, Bucharest. Bulgarian revolutionary and writer. Born into a wealthy landowning family, he studied at a Greek school in Istanbul. In 1841, he failed in an uprising against the Ottoman Empire and went into exile in France. During the Crimean War, in 1853-54, he attempted another uprising and was arrested. He escaped before his execution. In 1861-62, he established the "Bulgarian Legion" in Belgrade and clashed with the Serbian government. In 1866, he established the "Supreme National Committee of Bulgaria" in Romania and attempted to liberate his homeland by force, but died of illness before this project was completed. He left behind many achievements as a writer, journalist and historian, and had a great influence on intellectuals.

ブルガリアの革命家，作家。裕福な地主の家に生れ，イスタンブールのギリシア系の学校で学ぶ。 1841年反オスマン帝国蜂起に失敗し，フランスに亡命。クリミア戦争中の 53～54年再度蜂起を企て，逮捕。死刑執行前に逃亡。 61～62年ベオグラードに「ブルガリア軍団」を設立してセルビア政府と衝突。 66年ルーマニアに「ブルガリア最高国民委員会」を樹立，祖国の武力解放を企てたが，事業なかばにして病没。作家，ジャーナリスト，歴史家としても多くの業績を残し，知識人に大きな影響を与えた。
